Paint has been applied without any evidence of the artist’s hand in flat areas of defined pure colour. In its emphasis on pure colour and use of space, this work reflects the theories of the Post-Painterly Abstractionist movement of the 60s.
Kelly’s work in colour is extremely varied. The panel of solid colours is emphatic and self-sufficient; they calm their own space. His use of colour creates an intense ‘optical’ experience without expression or symbolism, and absorbed the simplified geometric style of Constructivism.
Later, Kelly modified his works to the larger scale of American Abstract Expressionism. Since then, his sole concern has been the internal relationship between colour and form.
At times, it is the absence of colour coupled with form. He may choose to eliminate colour altogether in favor of black, white and gray tones, thus accentuating the form.
